"We want to thank you for your Thanksgiving greeting and to share with you what BETTY did with it. BETTY suffers from arthritis which at times makes her feel useless as far as others are concerned. She still manages to prepare fantastically delicious meals and invites folks in for dinner and conversation, still knits hats which are used by Our Savior's Lutheran Church in its reach-out program to the needy in the community. (She says that the motion helps those aching, gnarled fingers of hers!) For some years she has designed what I'd call the "contemporary" version of Ukrainian Pysanky eggs. The disciplined designs with all their straight measured lines are just too hard for her, and so she has made up her own. We've been contributing pretty heavily to the ongoing needs of the sometimes invisible and neglected people of Haiti, particularly since the devastating earthquake. To bring a little more hope to their lives, Bets took the eggs to the Presbyterian Church (Yes, where I used to be pastor--17 years retired now), offered them for sale at a Mission Auction and at a Women's Christmas Tea, then to a salon nearby. Amazing! She actually raised over $1100 which she added to the $2 which you folks sent our way, and sent the funds off to the Presbyterian Church Center in Louisville, Ky--and they matched those funds, for work and encouragement for the people of Haiti.
I've included a picture of some of her eggs just for your pleasure. I'm so proud of her."
Filling Food Baskets
"We added to our giving into our church food basket. Thanks to you. It was fun to see the rare two dollar bill!!"
W. & R. S.
"Thank you so much for starting this inspiring idea that everyone can help share the generosity and spirit of abundance. I gave my $2 plus a little more to an animal shelter to make certain that all the animals are fed and cared for this holiday season. I also want you to know that have taken up your baton and I'm carrying it forth. I'm sending my entire faculty and graduates a $2 bill and asking them to pay it forward. May your generous and abundant idea continue around the world!"
G. T., Snohomish
"My husband is a numismatist and appreciated the bill for collector's purposes. I love this idea - it's very creative!"
C. & S. M., Arlington
"I put it in to my sister-in-law's fund. It is a fund of raising money to help pay for the hospital bills from her car accident she is still recovering. She was in ICU for a good month and now she is in a nursing home, so I put my 2 dollars in the Nycole Lindsley Recovery Fund."
Happy Boy Scouts
"We added the $2 to a $200 donation to Boy Scouts of America."
Snohomish High School
I just wanted to let you know that the $2.00 I received from you as seed money for the community, is being given to the Snohomish High School students project for the Food Bank & Tree of Giving, to be used as they need. The students are working so hard to help fill the food bank & to make sure children in the community have gifts under the tree. I feel confident the money will be put to good use.
Thank you for sending this out each year. It is a thoughtful gift that keeps on giving. :)
"Thank you, Claudia McClain! The $2 bill you paid forward was given to Salvation Army."
Supporting Teen Moms
"Claudia- Your $2 will be added to our family's donation to help make Christmas a little brighter for a little girl in Yakima whose mom is still in high school. I'm helping Erin's friend who works with teen moms at a local high school."
Christmas Tradition for the Grandkids
"I've always collected $2 bills to give to my grandchildren and will continue that tradition with the gift from the McClain team. I loved the team photos on your card1"
Groceries and Hot Chocolate
"With my $2.00, plus another $10.00 of my own, I scoured the grocery store for some fabulous deals! I ended up turning in 2 bags of groceries to the Food Bank donation volunteers that were outside the store that stormy day! (And bless them for standing outside in that miserable weather! It was, literally, raining sideways! Which compelled me to go back into the store, go to the Starbucks and get them each a Hot Chocolate."
Coffee for the Homeless
"I used the $2 you sent me to purchase a Starbucks card for a woman (homeless) that I see every morning on my way to work. Thanks for making me think :)."
Toys for Tots
"We are doing a major donation drive for Toys for Tots and I used ours to help purchase a couple of toys. It is a great way to start the giving time of the year."
P. & R. W., Everett
"We plan to slip your $2 into one of the children's books we'll be donating to the Mill Creek Food Bank this holiday season. It will be a wonderful Christmas morning surprise for a child. Shhhh ... don't tell! Thank you so much for doing this. It's a great reminder that, even through small acts of kindness, we all have the power to make a difference in the world!"
Bill & Trudi Trueit
"Tonight’s the big night! We pull our shift at the Mill Creek Food Bank this evening. Tucked into one of these books is your $2 (Okay, I know exactly where it is – very close to the top and pressed tightly into the spine so it won’t fall out). Thanks for being such an inspiration. Originally, I was just going to take ten books with me, but seeing you spread the love by giving away so many $2 bills I figured I could do a little more, too. There are 40 books (30 books and 10 audiobooks) in the box so most families with kids should get, at least, one book. And some very lucky child will get a little something extra, thanks to you!"
We thought that Trudi Trueit's idea was so great, we took 42 bills of our own and hid them in the toys for our Toy Drive before they were collected. What fun to be a Christmas Elf and Easter Bunny at the same time!!
"I used the $2 bill to pay for the beverage of the person behind me in the Starbucks line."
"Your agency Thanksgiving card arrived in my mail today. I always look forward to receiving it. The “family” theme really makes me feel like I know well all the members of your agency.
And, just so you know, my $2 and a bit more will be going to The Rotary International Foundation for the eradication of polio."
D. M., Seattle
Toys for Tots -- and Coffee
"OK I'll be honest, I used the actual $2 bill for coffee! BUT, the inspiration was not lost. We bought two bicycles for the Toys for Tots drive. Merry Christmas!"
M. & K. H., Everett
"Your thoughtfulness will be included with my donation for the Food Bank at St. Mary Magdalen hurch. Our Food Bank provided over 125 food baskets to poor families in South Everett!"
College or Trade School
"Claudia, thank you so much for your two dollars! What a sweet, wonderful idea. I do believe in paying to forward. The Kiwanis Club has started a Kenneth J. Ploeger Memorial Scholarship Fund in Kens Memory. We have collected enough for our first scholarship and have been raffling baskets at any function with which we are involved. Many people gave generous donations when Ken passed away and our two dollar donations will help another young person go to a business college or trade school of their choosing... We are in contact with our voc-tech department at Marysville High School to find these people and have them fill out an application based on their community service, grades and their desire to learn and earn..."
“Wonderful idea! Dropped the $2 bill in the Salvation Army kettle, and am inspired to do more.”
"I thought I would share what we did with your $2 bills. Angie and I combined them and added to it and donated to CareNet. What was great is that it was during a matching period so your $4 turned to $8. CareNet is neat organization that helps pregnant women choose life."
Christmas Blessings in Japan
"Your $2 bill inspired me to “adopt” three Japanese children that were displaced after the earthquake. i bought them each Christmas presents."
Combined Fund Drive
A state employee donated the $ bill to the state of Washington's "Combined Fund Drive," comparable to United Way.
"I loved the Thanksgiving card – I’ll be taking my $2 to the Springfield Soup Kitchen when I go serve thanksgiving dinner later today."
Seattle Public Library
"x10 found its way to the donation box at the downtown Seattle Public Library (my local branch.) Thanks for the push! :)"
"We have taken our $2 (and added several 0's) to make a Christmas for another family, who deserve it just as much as any of us..."
Christmas for Soldiers
"As we have been with you a while we have compared notes as our children grew up and moved on. Our middle son is now a Lieutenant in the Army and is currently deployed flying Chinook helicopters in Iraq. this will be his first Christmas that he has not been able to come home. So in light of that we are sending your $2 (plus some more) to the USO to make sure that all of our soldiers away from home will still have a Christmas. Thanks!"
